German prosecutors say they are assuming Madeleine is dead and are treating it as a murder inquiry. Madeleine's parents, Kate and Gerry, say all they have ever wanted is to find their daughter.
On 12 May , the McCanns say they "cannot describe the anguish and despair" they are feeling. Portuguese police say they believe Madeleine was abducted but is still alive and in Portugal. On 26 May , police issue a description of a man seen on the night of Madeleine's disappearance, possibly carrying a child.
In June , a Portuguese police chief admits vital forensic clues may have been destroyed as the scene was not protected properly. In July , British police send sniffer dogs to assist the investigation, and inspections of the McCann's apartment and rental car are conducted. By August it is days since Madeleine disappeared. Investigating officers publicly acknowledge she may not be found alive.
Prosecutors later say there is no new evidence to justify re-questioning them. Gerry McCann releases a video in November saying he believes his family was watched by "a predator" in the days before his daughter's disappearance. On 20 January the McCanns release sketches of a suspect, based on a description by a British holidaymaker of a "creepy man" seen at the resort.
In April, Portuguese police fly to the UK to sit in on interviews conducted by Leicestershire Police of the McCanns' friends they had dinner with on the night Madeleine disappeared. On 3 May , one year since the disappearance, Mrs McCann urges people to "pray like mad" for her little girl.
By July Portuguese police say they have submitted their final report on the case. Weeks later, authorities shelve their investigation and lift the "arguido" status of the McCanns. On 3 November , new images of how Madeleine might now look are released.
In March , the McCanns criticise the release of previously unseen Portuguese police files - detailing possible sightings of Madeleine - to British newspapers. A month later, in April, Gerry McCann says it is "incredibly frustrating" that police in Portugal and the UK had not been actively looking for his daughter "for a very long time".
In November , the couple sign a publishing deal to write a book about Madeleine's disappearance. The gratitude to those who have searched fruitlessly for Lyle and Marie was evident during the service, as attendees buirst into applause when two members of the search and rescue team were asked to stand.
After the service, mourners were given envelopes containing rose petals to be deposited at the cemetery plots that the elderly couple had previously purchased. The couple's son, Bret McCann, has said he hopes one day the actual remains of his parents will be buried there, but the RCMP has so far been unable to locate the McCanns. Last week, an Edmonton court granted an order declaring Lyle and Marie McCann officially dead, freeing their family to begin processing wills and handling the pair's estate.
Bret said the court was given a letter from the RCMP explaining that his parents were probably murdered. The investigation into the unresolved disappearance of the couple is still open, and saw RCMP searching dense bush in an area of west-central Alberta just last month. The Mounties say they have named a person of interest in their investigation, but no arrests have been made.

A letter from the RCMP said it is believe the couple was killed on July 3, the day they were seen gasing up their motorhome in their home town of St. Albert, just north of Edmonton, before a trip to British Columbia.
June RCMP officers and a search-and-rescue team sweep an area near Lodgepole , southwest of Edmonton, looking for evidence in the couple's disappearance. They don't say what led them to the area. Divers searched a pond on the property and police also used a backhoe to comb through a pile of debris in a scrapyard. They also searched the septic tanks on the property. Police would not say what led them to search the area.
Vader remains in custody and faces a number of charges, including some related to theft, firearms and arson. July Vader's sister, Bobbi-Jo Vader, tells reporters that Vader was "tired" and "sick" when he appeared at her family's home on July 4, a day after the McCanns were last seen. However, she says she does not think her brother was involved in the couple's disappearance. July A vigil for the McCanns is held in St. Albert, Alta. Family members, friends and neighbours remain hopeful the couple will come home alive.
Meanwhile, RCMP suspend the ground search so investigators can focus on pursuing tips from the public.
